Kitchen Repair and Maintenance Basic Guide
The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house and some of the most common household problems can all occur in this room – leaky faucet, malfunctioning dishwasher, broken appliance – the list is endless. Doing kitchen repairs is not as daunting or complicated as it might seem. Here are some tips to help you.
Sink Repair – Leaks and clogs are the two most common issues that affect sink drains. Clogs form when debris and grease get collected in the pipes.
For clogs, take one-half cup baking soda and pour it down the drain. Follow it with another half cup of vinegar. Finally place some boiling water down the drain. After a few minutes, turn on your faucet to see if the sink is draining well again. For stubborn clogs, you can use a plunger to dislodge the clogs.
Leaks can happen due to various reasons. It is important to first identify the same before choosing a remedy.
Check under the sinks to locate potential leaks. These leaks can cause extensive damage to flooring, cabinets and encourage the growth of mold and mildew. If there are leaks in the drain, you can repair it just by tightening the slip nuts that connect the drainpipes. Do not make it too tight else, the fitting might develop cracks. If the leakage is still there, you can replace the nylon washer positioned under the slip nut. If the leaks are due to supply lines, you can tighten the same to stop the leak.
Appliance Repair – It is important to clean and maintain your kitchen appliances to prevent repairs. If you find any fault in your kitchen appliance within a short period of its purchase, it would still be under warranty. You can take it back to the shop for repair. If you have been using your appliance for many years, and find that certain parts now need repairs, or replacement, check first to see if the cost of repairing would be more than buying a new appliance. If you want to go for a repair and if it looks complicated, you might want to call a licensed electrician to solve the problem.
Tap/Faucet Repair – If you have a leaky faucet, a quick way to solve the problem is to turn off the valves and replace the washer.
Dishwasher Repair – If you are facing issues with your dishwasher, examine the switches, doors, the drain valves and the dish rack for any problem and tackle accordingly.
No matter what the problem in your kitchen, there are always quick fix solutions to take care of the same. In case you are unable to repair your kitchen issues, do not hesitate to call a professional. They have the training and knowledge to quickly repair any issue.
